China has spent more than $500 billion on new tracks, trains and stations in the past five years, while the country’s national railway operator, China State Railway Group, is nearing $1 trillion of debt and other liabilities. Just keeping up with its debt requires $25 billion annually. While passenger numbers have rebounded following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, raising ridership will be especially challenging in the years to come as China’s population is projected to shrink by around 200 million people in the next three decades. We have these things called airplanes and cars in the United States which combine to make rail redundant for passenger travel. That company only posted a profit because it was likely receiving heavy state subsidies. I see you didn't read the whole article. In any case, at the rate it's going it should only take 2,000 years to pay off the company's liabilities. The article does highlight examples of misallocated capital investment. Why does a rural county with a shrinking population need HSR exactly? Is that honestly the best use of resources you can think of? I'm not saying that HSR is bad in concept. Several Chinese lines that focus on express travel between Tier 1 and 2 cities are clearly successful. I'm just saying that there's a lot of chaff with the wheat...and it's expensive chaff.
